Okay, so I'm slow. It's not my fault that I don't have a computer to myself in there. But anyway, congratulations on the championship title for the girls, and 4th-place finish for the guys.
Here's to the excellence of VJFB for the years to come. Cheers.

Hello guys and girls.

I'm back (to nag). Last match of the season, eh? Well, just a key point I'd like to drive across today, in poor English, is simply this: don't give chance.

Chase down the ball, go in hard (but properly) for a challenge, cover every shot, stay low and shield the ball, and follow your man. Every single second counts. Scoring one goal isn't enough. Leading by one point isn't enough. Blocking one shot isn't enough. It's only enough when the final whistle is blown, and win or lose, you bend over gasping for air, knowing that you'll be mauled by a mad dog chasing you simply because you have expended your last ounce of energy.

When the team is trailing in the scoreline, keep chasing it back. Don't you dare, for a moment, give up on the match. Your name isn't printed on your jersey. It's your school's name, and you better damned play like you earned your place in the team. It's "VJC", and you'd jolly well play like how Victorians do. Win it with pride, and if you don't, lose with dignity, that your opponents will respect you for the manner you conduct yourselves on-court (and, cough, out of the court, for that matter).

I was thinking about the college anthem as I was lying in prone position in the middle of nowhere (don't mock me), and I pondered this line:
For others came before and went, and carried to the world, Victoria's fame and our intent to keep her flag unfurled.
I was studying the etymology of the noun "intent", and I found that its Latin origin, "intentio", connotes the idea of effort and exertion in achieving something. For one last time, how much effort and exertion will be expended in VJC's name? Go the distance, that you may be held in esteem not so much for what you achieved, but for what you displayed. By the time everyone's tired, how much more will you squeeze out of yourself for the team?

Forget the online articles, write the story of your last match yourselves, that you will remember it as the match of your lives.

"Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even." - Muhammad Ali

"Some people want it to happen; some wish it would happen; others make it happen." - Michael Jordan

Just read redsports.sg, it wasnt at all nice looking at photos of Victorians who tried but were disappointed. The soccer boys probably have the potential to make it into another final this year but they just ran out of time, space and chances. That's the cruel fact in sports.

Despite not winning, we are still proud of our soccer boys for having worked so hard to achieve their goals, at training and matches. I must say that the real test has only just begun for them... a test of character, a test on how to pick themselves up and be ready for the next challenge in life.

As a Victorian, it is really nice to see the hockey girls make it 8-in-a-row this year, the soccer girls making it 4 finals (i'm not sure if I'm right) in a row. I know it will be even sweeter if our floorball teams can achieve similar results (we shall start with 2 finals in a row).

There isnt going to be outright favourites or easy meat at this stage of the competition. The difference between the teams is really very marginal.

Go out there and fight for Victoria.
Fight hard for what our team deserves.
For there isnt going to be a 2nd chance, 45min is all we have to show the rest what we are capable of. There must be no regrets. Win or lose, we must be able to hold our heads up for there is nothing to be ashamed of if we have tried your best.

Match timings for this week:

Mon: VJC vs HCI 345pm @CCK (Girls Group Stage)
Tues: VJC vs MJC 2pm @ CCK (Guys Semis)
Wed: VJC vs MJC or RVH 330pm @ CCK (Girls Semis)

Will update again on the training times for this week.

"If you could have the arms of Hercules;
legs as swift as the wind;
if you could leap shoulder high above the rim;
have the kick of a dolphin; the reflexes of a cat;
if you could have all this, you would have the body,
you would have the tools.
But you will not have greatness until you understand that
the strongest muscle is the heart.
" ~ Andrea Bocelli

I hope that both the guys and girls team have faith,
faith in your teammates,
that they'll run theirs lungs out to cover you when you lose the ball,
faith in our coach,
that the decisions he makes is for the best of the team
but most importantly,
faith in yourself
that you are truly capable to do what you are supposed to do,
to run even when you are beyond tired,
not just because you can, but because you must
because we might never get a second shot at this.

I ask all of you to have faith, not just belief,
because when you belief, somehow or rather, you know what you trust in is there.
But when you have faith, the thing you are trusting in, you haven't seen before.
In crucial points in the semis, you'll feel that you can't run, that you can't keep up anymore
but this 'thing',the desire and the hunger for success,
will bring you far above your limits
and push you on.
Your desire will make you run and play like you have never seen yourself before.
Have faith in that.

It all comes down to this question guys and girls,
How much do you want this?

Augustine.

Hello.

Okay, so I've been following the content of this page and I've finally decided to get a piece of it after reading all the posts about preparing for games and stuff. I guess there's nothing much left to say, firstly because I'm here this late (relatively) and all the previous posts put together provide quite a comprehensive coverage of the issues.

I'd simply like to say, that how well the team does is a reflection of the combined individual desires of its members to win. Not just a match. Every ball, every 50-50 challenge, every double-team - break a match down into its micro-components, and you'll find that every single movement and action adds up to that victory that each team member desires in varying degrees.

So, how much does each of you want it? I'll relate from personal experience that there is no experience comparable to looking at the scoreboard as the final buzzer sounds, knowing that your team scored more goals. Get there, and you'll see what I mean. That medal is yours to keep. The stories are yours to tell. People like me, we've never been in a sports CCA before. Hell, I've never even played a sport competitively before. I don't know how many people there are like I was. When that medal goes around your neck, it's priceless.

So okay, maybe I'm hyping this whole thing up just because I was some no-life wannabe athlete. Maybe. But maybe the desire to want to achieve something big, the same desire in our team-mates that year, most of whom didn't have much of a sports background, laid the foundations for us to make things happen. I've been through a semi-final knock-out and a 3rd/4th placing loss playing in the exact same position on the court, and I know how it feels, at least from my point of view. Don't let the team suffer the same fate. All of you have capabilities above and beyond producing those results. Start your engines, floor your pedals and run over the opposition. You can do it. You, as a team, and no less.

"Champions aren't made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them - a desire, a dream, a vision." - Muhammad Ali

With that, I say, "Go VJC!", in as loud and enthusiastic a voice as I can muster. Enjoy your week. I'm booking in (sigh...)

P.S. Please learn to listen out for your goalies when there's a need to. They get the best view of the court.
P.P.S. I'm not going to be able to watch a single match this season. Boo hoo (seriously, it's moderately upsetting for me).

Dear all,

As of now, the boys have won 2 matches and the girls won 2 and drew 1. I must say these results are decent by many standards. I do not deny that many of you fought hard and worked really hard on the court. We have already came 1/2 way (or 1/3 way), matches are just going to be tighter and more difficult, our opponents are going to try means and ways to beat us. Do not give them the slightest chance to do that.

There is a lot of room for improvement in our performances. We haven't played to our full potential yet. I'm not even sure if all of us have put in 100% effort yet. Our captains and many of our players really want to do well, win matches and probably even the championships.

Seriously, its going to be anybody's championship for the taking. Its all going to boil down to who is hungriest in their desire to win, strongest in their mental strength to bounce back, working hardest to put in 100% throughout the matches, amongst others.

If you havent realised by now, these are elements which Yan, the teachers, the supporters have little or no control whatsoever. We can only cheer, remind by the bench or supporters' stands. Whether you perform well or not, win or loss, depends on YOURSELVES.

I need you to focus, prepare well, have a clear mind and think, keep your confidence and heads up all the time. Shake off setbacks, bounce back quickly and continue fighting. It is only when you have done all that, that it will be a job considered well done. Each time you concede a goal, get 2 back, each time you lose the ball, get it back for us twice etc.

Believe me, it doesnt feel good to be knocked out of the semi-finals, it doesnt feel good to be 3rd or 4th, not even 2nd.

Who do you play for?

First of, guys congrats on the win against YJC.
Girls, do not be discouraged because of the match played against RIJC.
It should not bring us down but it should make us want to play better and to fight harder.
We have two more matches left for the qualifying rounds, so lets show them what we are made of!
Do not hang your heads down whenever a goal is scored against us, but lift them up high because we know that we are going to come back faster and stronger and get back those goals.
We have learnt a very important lesson through the RIJC match, that its not over till the final whistle.
So do not give up even though there are only a few seconds left on the clock.
Lets go all out, and get the championship title that we deserve!

Some quotes which I thought applies to our team:

"There is no room in your mind for negative thoughts. The busier you keep yourself with the particulars of shot assessment and execution, the less chance your mind has to dwell on the emotional."

"Victory belongs to the most persevering."

"Its not necessarily the amount of time you spend at practice that counts; it's what you put into practice that makes the difference."

"Ask not what your teammates can do for you. Ask what you can do for your teammates."

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit."

""A winner is a loser who was willing to fail and get up, fail and get up, fail and get up, fail and get up and win."
