Okay guys, I'm gonna say some words now. I prefer to say these stuff in front of you all as a group but I'll make an exception this time. Personally, I feel that this year's guys' team has a hell lot of potential. From the twins to the ever-improving Jia Yung, you guys have grown exponentially character-wise and skills-wise over the past year and we have molded into one strong and cohesive unit. And I believe that with the team that we have, we don't have to fear anyone, because fear breeds doubt in one's abilities, doubts lead to mistakes and mistakes cost games. We may have finished 4th best last year, but we're gonna gun for the title this year. Take a leaf out of the movie 'Miracle' that we watched during the March holidays. The USA team aren't technically superior to the Soviets but teamwork and cohesiveness prevailed in the end. Coach Herb said something along the lines of 'I don't need the best players to beat the Soviets, I just need the RIGHT ones' And Yan has chosen all of us because he believes that we are the right players to bring back the title to where it belongs. So trust in Yan, he has a reason behind every decision that he makes so we have to respect that as at the end of the day, it's for the benefit of the team.

Winners are those who dare to dream

I know that I'm not the best captain in the world, guys, but over the past year, I appreciate the respect that you guys have given me. I know I'm not as inspirational as other captains, but my desire to lead the team to success is no less than theirs. I myself have grown a lot over the past year in this new role, having been a squad player for the previous 5 years. I must say that I'm proud to be able to lead you guys out and there's no team I'd rather lead than VJC. Now the time has come for us to show everyone what we've been training for. I might be wearing the armband out there, but ALL of us will be donning the word 'VJC' at the back of our jerseys so we jolly well fight like Victorians

A quitter never wins and a winner never quits - Napoleon Hill

That's right guys, we won't quit because Victorians just don't know when to quit. When we concede, I don't ever want to see any of you guys face the floor. When you concede, keep your chin up, pick the ball out of the goal post, put it on the centre line and get that goal back. Because if we lose confidence in ourselves, another goal will come in.. and another.. and another. Now this is something we don't want right? Even if we are 5 goals down, NEVER LOSE HOPE BECAUSE IT'S NOT OVER TILL THE FINAL WHISTLE. We keep fighting on because we believe we can come back from that deficit. We must show our opponents how stubborn we are and that we just don't know when to give up. Case in point, this was what a 15-year-old Afi blogged 3 years ago (Yes, I used to have a personal blog):

Miracles do not happen often
But today, it happened
A Miracle
Which was totally unexpected

It was in our last floorball league match of the season
Against TP Wolves
If you were 1-5 down with 8 minutes to go,
You would naturally feel
Disheartened,
Disappointed,
Totally given up

But then,
We scored a goal
And another one,
And another one,
3 goals in the space of 7 minutes
It was 4-5
When we had made it 3-5,
I asked myself whether the unthinkable, a miracle, will happen

4-5 down with 1 minute to go
Then,
When the clock read:
59 min 20s
We scored a goal
Celebrated by swarming the court
59 min 58s
Melvin scored the winning goal
Sparking scenes of jubilation
From the Victoria Skools Floorball bench
It was totally unexpected
2 goals in the final 40s
To turn a loss into a win
2s before the final whistle,
Came the winning goal
Unbelievable

Truthfully,
The thought of a loss never crossed our mind
We focused on getting a goal
One by one
And the effort we put in
Was tremendous
Spectators who watched were bewildered
It was comeback floorball at it's very best
But I come to wonder,
Was it really a miracle?
It was us who played the match,
It was us who put in the effort,
It was us who who never gave up,
It was us who displayed grit and determination,
Which led me to think,
This was not a miracle
This is the most powerful display of Victorian Spirit I have ever seen

There might be times in A Div when we find ourselves in this situation and if we do, I want every one of us to remember this post. The ball is round, and anything can happen. But the best thing is if we don't find ourselves in that position in the first place right? And to do that, we have to be FEARLESS, we have to be CLINICAL, because we aren't 4th place material, we're CHAMPION material.

If anyone of you saw the CCA guidebook this year, under the floorball page lies the quote - Champions aren't made from training, they're made from the passion and desire to train This just shows how much desire and passion is important. I know I've asked you guys this many times, but I'm gonna ask it again and again as long as it's necessary - How much do you want this?

I want it really really badly this year and I'm sure you guys want it too. Now it's the last lap of our journey as a team but it's the lap that really counts. So make it count, guys. For the girls, let's go for double champs and re-write history to be the first VJFB team to do so. Let's re-live the moments in the picture below, but with gold medals around all our necks(:

Who are we?
Champions

@ 3:23 PM

RJ kungfu master. See how she shoots. Remember to lean forward, bend low, follow through, and your shots will be much better. The night before the game, close your eyes and start visualising what you are going to do. Prepare yourself mentally for the match. Remember to shield. You've seen yourself play today, and do make sure that what you've done wrong you're never going to do it again. Don't forget what Yan said. Don't forget why and who you are playing for. Be focused the moment you wake up. Everyone of you have a part to play, and without you, VJFB wouldn't be the same. Here is something Harilyn wrote:

The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows.

It's a very mean and nasty place, and i don't care how tough you are...it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me or nobody is going to hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit it, it's about how hard you can get hit...and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!

-Rocky Balboa

C'mon girls. Let's show the world what we are capable of! It's now or never. Give in your 100% and we'll end the season with no regrets:)

hey girls
i'm not good with speeches, and everytime i try to bring something across, i dunno whether it does get across or not...so let's try this. (haha)
today is friday. Tomorrow is Saturday. (Yesterday is thurday) Its our last training before the A divs. What are you girls feeling? Are you scared? Are you excited? Do you look forward to it? To me, its a challenge. A challenge to perform well, to have fun, to go through all this with you girls. Floorball is fun. We are fun.

What do you girls think when you step on court? Are you scared you'll do badly, and disappoint your team, disappoint Yan? Or do you take it as a challenge and fight all your best? do you girls look forward to the matches? From experience, i do look forward to playing, because i know i will do well. The stronger the opponent team is, the greater the challenge is for me. Recently, against a certain strong team, i find myself enjoying the game. Yes, they are good. They are shooting against me like free, and i let in quite a few. But what is most important is that i know i performed well, and i find myself enjoying every shot that they take on me. Before i step on court, i tell myself that i will perform well. And who cares if the opponent is a national team player? i know i can stop her shot. And when i do, it's exhilerating. It's possible to lose a match and yet go home with a sense of satisfaction because you know you've done well. Likewise, it's possible to win a match and go home feeling sucky because what you showed on court wasnt your best. So what i'm saying here is that first, have confidence in yoursef. Know that you can do it, because you have done so before. Know that you can shoot/defend well, because you have shot/defended well before. Once you start playing well, you'll naturally have more confidence and play even better. And the only pressure you have on you is the pressure you put on yourself. Trust me on that. When there is no pressure you'll find yourself enjoying the game, and you will perform better. And when you perform well, people praise you. And its like the multiplier effect. You feel good about yourself and you play better and you feel better about yourself and you play even better and so on.

Let's say you let in a goal. What are you going to do? Let in some more? I need you girls to have a strong mentality. Let in 1, get it back. Let in 2, get it back. The game is never over until the final whistle blows. Miss a shot? try again. If you take 10 shots on target i dont believe that not a single one will get in. If you let in a goal, make sure you don't make the same mistakes you've made. Then move on. What's over cannot be rewinded. What's more important is how we are gonna put more goals in THEIR goalpost. Treat every opponent as RIJC. We want to win them. We want to win every time we step on court. Don't underestimate anyone, because you're only going to kill yourself like that. Treat them as the best, and so put in your best because anything less than your best will not be enough.

We've come a long way. It's not easy. Even for me. I know im not a player, i may not know how it feels like to play. But im your keeper. I can see how you play. I know what shots you're good at, where you're weak at. We can tell you, but you have to work on it. If you dont help yourself, who will? I know i've been soft, but do you girls really need a harsh captain to do well? Show me that i dont have to go there.

Tomorrow is our last training. There's a time to be serious, there's a time to have fun. You girls are really fun to hang out with, but on court, take it seriously. Take this whole A Divs seriously. Stop all the useless screaming because when we go in, we mean business. We're not going in for leisure. Be focused. Or else, what are you playing for if you're not going to take this seriously? Once you get in, switch to serious mode okay. If you are going to fool around on court. take it easy and not give your best, sure. You'll stay on the bench. And im sure thats not where you want to be.

Lastly, I wanna thank you girls. We are vjfb'11. We are a team. We will overcome all obstacles together. Go listen to footprints in the sand. "And just when i, i thought i lost my way, you gave me strength to carry on" I think this song is really meaningful, and i hope you girls will feel this way towards everyone in the team. Always be there for each other. And know that your team mate will always be there for you. I promise you, i'm always there. I'll always be behind you. (have to right. goalpost at the back.)
All the way girls.
Let's do this together.

ALICIA'S GUIDE TO IMPROVING FLOORBALL

Practice passing:

paste sticker on the wall/floor and make sure that the ball hits it for every pass i make.

do 10 consecutive passes. if i fail, which means it's a miss, DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN.

Practice shooting:

take a video of yourself shooting. ( i started practicing shooting from afar- about the length of the squash court.)

remember what you did for every shot that you take. ( eg. shot 1: lean forward, shot 2: lean forward and cover blade)

replay the video and see which one looks correct and which one makes tha ball travel the fastest.

if you're not sure about which style of shooting is correct, go to youtube and look for floorball shooting videos or something. OR. during trainings, look at how the guys shoot and try to imitate their moves.

with love,

alicia (sister)
